Collection: CGC Graded Comics
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) grading is the industry-standard, third-party authentication and professional grading service for comic books. Founded in 2000, it provides an independent assessment of a comic’s condition (on a 10-point scale) and authenticity, sealing the book in a protective, tamper-evident plastic holder, often referred to as "slabbing".
The Grading Process
- Expert Evaluation: Multiple professionals examine each comic to assess its grade, which is based on factors like cover, spine integrity, corners, and page quality.
- Restoration Check: A crucial part of the process is detecting if a comic has been altered (e.g., color touch-up, spine splitting repair).
- Encapsulation (Slabbing): Once graded, the comic is sealed in a "slab"—a clear, rigid, tamper-evident plastic holder designed for long-term preservation.
- Grading Scale: CGC uses a 10-point scale, with 0.5 increments for lower grades and 0.2 increments for higher grades (9.0–10.0), where 10.0 is Gem Mint and 0.5 is Poor.
CGC Label Colors (What they mean)
The label on the slab indicates the type of grade assigned.
- Blue (Universal): The standard label for original, unrestored comics.
- Yellow (Signature Series): For comics signed by a creator in the presence of a CGC representative.
- Purple (Restored): Indicates the book has undergone restoration (e.g. color touch).
- Green (Qualified): Used when a book has a significant defect that doesn't fit standard grading, such as a missing coupon or page, or when a signature is unverified.
Benefits of CGC Grading
- Value Assessment: Graded comics, particularly high-grade ones (9.6, 9.8), often command much higher prices in the market.
- Authentication: CGC verifies that the book is not a counterfeit or a modern facsimile, which is critical for expensive key issues.
- Protection: The slab provides archival-quality protection against environmental damage.
- Liquidity: Graded books are easier to sell online or at auction because the condition is standardized and trusted, removing the subjectivity of "raw" (un-slabbed) comics.
